ID3 tags from freedb

"Big Family Good" - I can speak Mandarin, but I never learned keyboard input, sorry. I
I have a problem I'm sure some of you have solved before, and I hope someone can guide me. My father-in-law wants me to rip some of his audio CDs so he can listen to them on his iPod. These are Taiwanese popular songs from the 1970's - 80's.
I am using K3b to rip the discs to .mp3 files. It seems that the disc signatures are recognized by cddb, and metadata gets downloaded for album/artist/title, but the characters are all garbage - like looking at big5 encoding on an application set for latin1 character set. The ID3 tags, and the auto-generated filenames, are therefore also useless garbage, and the music files are unmanageable, e.g.
However, the box I'm using is running a UTF-8 locale, so that is not exactly the problem:
I suspect the problem lies with the encoding coming back from cddb... like maybe they run a database with latin1 encoding, and some users tried to upload big5 metadata.
Other than getting my wife to type in all the metadata manually (there's quite a bit of it!), is there an automated conversion I can try on the freedb metadata?
Thanks for any help.
